What’s the catch?
Our drawings are not suitable for the purposes of most council submissions.
Why?
Because they are based on estate agent floor plans, that are for illustration purposes.
What you say:
“We need some drawings, can you help and what’s the cost.”
The need: Drawings for a builder to price, or for the council.
What we hear: Client needs to explore needs, to form a brief, that can then be explored, prior to determining an architectural intervention that we need to produce drawings for.
The disconnect: Drawings are seen from two different perspectives, hence cost, time and expectations are likely to misaligned.
What you say:
“Oh, we didn’t realise it would look like this!”
The need: Your architect to find a better way of communicating your drawings.
What we hear: This wasn’t what we wanted, you didn’t listen, this fails to meet our needs
The disconnect: We’ve assumed that the drawings were readable.
What you say:
“We’re not quite sure what we want to do?”
The need: To assess what works / doesn’t work and draw up a list of needs which building works needs to address.
We hear: Client needs a traditional architectural service, to explore needs, to form a brief, that can then be explored, prior to determining an architectural intervention that we need to produce drawings for.
The disconnect: Client needs to explore multiple options, including reorganisation current space. They may not need traditional drawings yet.
What you say:
"We want to extend to the side/ rear / carry out a loft conversion"
The need: To see how the proposed extension will change your current property.
We hear: The client wants to extend and will need to explore needs to form a brief, that can then be explored, prior to determining an architectural intervention that we need to produce drawings for.
The disconnect: The client needs to see their idea. Traditional architectural service are costly and take time.
And finally, the one we hear the most...
What you say:
"Why do architects charge so much? I can get someone online to draw my plans for a fraction of the cost!"
The need: Drawings for Planning or a builder,
We hear: Our services aren’t valued and we charge too much
The disconnect: Clients don’t think our services match our fees, we haven’t expressed the benefits of using an architect and how we add value.
